These Are the Top Winter Vacation Spots

It’s not too late to wrap up 2024 with a memorable trip, whether you’re looking for a quick ski getaway or a relaxing retreat on a tropical beach before the holiday madness hits. There are plenty of destinations, both near and far, that offer the perfect escape. And with some great hotel and resort options, you’ll be set to enjoy your end-of-year adventure in style.

Miami is always a top pick for a December getaway, especially if you want to soak up the sun on South Beach, shop at upscale spots like the Design District or Aventura Mall, or admire the vibrant outdoor art scene in Wynwood. If you time it right, you can even catch Art Basel from December 6-8. The downtown Brickell area offers stunning city views, especially at night with its glittering skyscrapers and the lively Miami River. While the warm 80-degree weather doesn’t exactly scream “holiday season,” Miami still embraces the festivities, with events like “Zoo Lights” at Zoo Miami brightening up the city in December.

For those looking to escape to the Caribbean, the U.S. Virgin Islands offer a passport-free tropical retreat for U.S. citizens. St. Croix, the largest island, promises relaxation and adventure, with its historical charm, superb diving spots (including night dives at Frederiksted Pier), and the lively Crucian Christmas Festival. St. John, the smallest island, is a nature lover’s paradise, thanks to Virgin Islands National Park, where you can explore unspoiled beaches, hiking trails, and ancient petroglyphs. St. Thomas, known for its beauty and duty-free shopping in Charlotte Amalie, is also the most accessible island with direct flights from major U.S. cities. With its warm weather attracting winter vacationers, now’s the time to plan your trip to these picturesque islands.

If you’re more of a winter wonderland enthusiast, the Adirondacks in upstate New York are perfect for a snowy retreat. Just five hours north of New York City, this region feels worlds apart in December. Snow-covered mountains, quaint towns, and breathtaking scenery make it easy to see why it’s been a favorite getaway since the late 19th century. Lake Placid, famous for hosting the Winter Olympics in 1932 and 1980, offers everything from skiing to shopping. Nearby, Saranac Lake is a charming town filled with historical buildings and plenty of winter sports like snowmobiling. Families can also enjoy The Polar Express train ride from Utica, where kids in pajamas can meet Santa and experience a magical holiday adventure. And if your idea of the perfect winter vacation involves curling up by a cozy fireplace, the Adirondacks have plenty of places where you can do just that.

If you’re in the mood for something a little more glamorous, head to Saint-Tropez on France’s Côte d’Azur. While this chic summer destination may seem an unlikely December choice, it offers a quieter, more serene experience at this time of year. With most of the crowds gone and some hotels and restaurants closed for the season, it’s the perfect time to explore the area in peace. The weather, while chilly in the mornings, quickly warms up under the Mediterranean sun, making it ideal for coastal walks and hikes. One of the most stunning spots to visit is La Chartreuse de la Verne, a 12th-century monastery hidden in the dense forest, offering a glimpse into the region’s rich history.

Whether you’re chasing sun, snow, or scenic views, there’s no shortage of fantastic destinations to close out your year on a high note.
