The Best Place to Visit In Upstate New York

When people think of New York, their minds often go straight to the bustling streets of Manhattan, but the state has so much more to offer beyond the city’s bright lights. Upstate New York is a treasure trove of natural beauty, dotted with majestic mountains, serene lakes, and quaint small towns that are perfect for a getaway. The region is rich with history, culture, and outdoor activities, making it an ideal destination for those looking to explore beyond the concrete jungle. From the iconic Niagara Falls to the historic National Baseball Hall of Fame, there’s something for everyone. And for those who enjoy a good festival, history museum, or a taste of fine wine, Upstate New York is a dream come true.

One of the gems of Upstate New York is Conesus Lake, the westernmost of the 11 Finger Lakes. This charming lake draws visitors year-round, but it truly comes alive on July 3rd each year during the “Ring of Fire” tradition. Thousands of flares are lit along the shoreline, illuminating the night as fireworks explode overhead—a spectacle that attracts crowds from all over. Nearby, the small hamlet of Lakeville is home to Little Lake Brewing, a must-visit stop on the Livingston Libation Loop. This self-guided tour maps out some of the region’s best wineries, cideries, and craft breweries, offering a taste of the local flavors. While you’re in the area, be sure to explore the Inspirations Trail, which features vibrant street murals and eclectic art across nine villages along a scenic 90-mile route.

Conesus Lake itself is a sight to behold. Stretching about eight miles long and a mile wide at its broadest point, the lake covers a surface area of 3,240 acres, or just over five square miles. It’s one of the shallower Finger Lakes, with an average depth of 38 feet and a maximum depth of 66 feet. Sitting at around 818 feet above sea level, Conesus Lake lives up to its Seneca name, meaning “Always Beautiful.” The lake is a favorite among vacationers from the Greater Rochester Area, with its picturesque waterfronts that blend recreational spaces, developed areas, and agricultural lands.

The lake’s shallow waters make it a popular spot for swimming, but fishing reigns supreme here. Anglers flock to Conesus Lake for its diverse fish species and the numerous prime fishing spots that are easily accessible. With four public boat launch sites and several private marinas, the lake’s waters are often dotted with boats, kayaks, and paddleboards, all adding to the lively atmosphere.

However, the lake’s popularity and development have come at a cost. The shores of Conesus Lake are packed with cottages and year-round homes, particularly along the east and west sides, where Vitale Park (formerly Sand Point) serves as a popular recreational hub. Beyond the lakefront properties, farmlands stretch out, leaving little in the way of untouched natural areas. Unfortunately, this overdevelopment has led to a decline in water quality, a reminder that the beauty of Conesus Lake comes with the responsibility to preserve it for future generations.
