Saudi Arabia Set to Build World’s Largest Building

The Mukaab skyscraper in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, is poised to become the world’s largest building by volume. Recently breaking ground, this massive structure is part of a broader development project spearheaded by the New Murabba and the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF). Although it won’t be the tallest structure globally, at a projected height of 1,312 feet, it will be a groundbreaking architectural feat in terms of usable volume, aiming to surpass Boeing’s Everett Factory in Washington, which currently holds the title.

True to its name, “Mukaab,” meaning “cube” in Arabic, the skyscraper will feature a block-like shape with an intricately designed exterior inspired by contemporary Najdi architecture and traditional regional art. However, the real spectacle is on the inside, where the structure opens up into a spacious atrium encircling a central tower that spirals upward. Beyond just being an architectural marvel, this space will house a staggering amount of real estate, including more than one million square feet dedicated to office space and two million square feet for retail. The building will also feature private residences, a performing arts theater, a university, and even a museum, making it a self-contained urban hub.

This massive construction is part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, a comprehensive plan aimed at diversifying the country’s economy and enhancing its cultural standing on the global stage. The Mukaab skyscraper is envisioned as a centerpiece for this initiative, transforming the capital city with a modern downtown development. The building’s sheer size and innovative design reflect the ambitions of the Saudi government to be at the forefront of global architecture and urban planning.

Once complete, the Mukaab is expected to eclipse Boeing’s Everett Factory, which has been the largest building by volume since 1967. Boeing’s facility spans 472 million cubic feet, originally designed for assembling the company’s largest airliners. Mukaab’s groundbreaking development sets a new benchmark, promising to be a transformative presence in the architectural and business worlds. If the project stays on track, it will welcome its first occupants by 2030, ushering in a new era for Riyadh and beyond.
