Situated just a short distance from downtown Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the Graylyn Estate stands as a captivating and historically rich destination. Originally built with 85 rooms to accommodate guests, this estate has been transformed into a hotel and conference center that exudes charm and hospitality while preserving its local heritage. In many ways, it offers a more intimate experience akin to the grandeur of the Biltmore, another notable estate in North Carolina.
The History and Architecture of Graylyn Estate
Constructed in the 1920s, the Graylyn Estate was the vision of Bowman Gray and his wife Nathalie, who infused European influences from their travels into its design. Nathalie’s fondness for European and French Riviera aesthetics is evident in details such as imported paneling from Paris in the main floor library/sitting room, a castle-like stone exterior, and weathered finishes throughout the estate. The Persian Card Room is another highlight, showcasing the estate’s unique style.
After serving as dormitories for Wake Forest University, the estate opened its doors to the public in 1984. Despite a fire in 1980 that affected the third floor, the estate underwent restoration and continues to welcome guests, offering them a glimpse into its storied past.
